One small voice in a million,
I have taken a long break from writing in the blog but once again have become inspired.
It's been 3 years since I have last written. 3 years and many changes! Wow!
I was inspired to blog and then somewhere along the line, I forgot to add content.

I have taken several classes in the last few years that have taught me new modalities and techniques that I could use with my clients. What is hard sometimes, is actually using them. People are actually quite apprehensive to my using these modalities. You see, some people think that if you are not "massaging" for the full amount of time you are jipping them. What they don't see is the benefit of castor oil packs, heat lamps, tens units, and other modalities that will essence aid in the massage and in helping to heal thier ailments faster.

I will be taking a seminar of stress and accupressure this week and I look forward to seeing what I learn or relearn. See, I have taken a class on accupressure before but this seminar focuses on using accupressure for stress relief. Of all of us, who isn't stressed? All of us are!

Hopefully I can better equip myself and keep up with this blog. Three years is way to long and with another three years of massage under my belt, I have learned a bit more and have a bit more experience.

There is so much I need to learn yet and so much I need to relearn. It's amazing what you forget over a matter of time.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Sciatica

I found out some great information about Sciatica. In this article I have only a small portion of the information I obtained. I look forward to sharing more.

6/17/09 Sciatica

Sciatica (taken from Sciatic solutions; written by Dr. Loren Fishman and Carol Ardman)
I learned the basics of how and why we can suffer from sciatica. In this book it was reconfirmed that sciatica is merely a symptom of something greater and not the actual problem.
In the book Sciatica solutions it gives seven general causes of sciatic pain.

1) compression of the sciatic nerve by a herniated disc in the back

2) spinal stenosis is (narrowing of the spinal column)

3) spondylosis (degenerative spinal osteoarthritis, often associated with aging)

4) Nerve Entrapment ( the most common is what is called piriformis syndrome) (which I will cover later in detail), A recent article found that 2/3 of non-disc sciatica was caused by this "nerve entrapment".

5) Inflammation and swelling from any other type of arthritis, sprains, joint slippage, or possibly infection.

6) Vascular problems. (ex. late pregnancy stages - due to increased blood volume in the spine, the fixed space inside the spinal cord may narrow, compressing g nerves and causing sciatica; for those with a condition called "pseudo sciatica" or intermittent claudication, poor blood supply in the legs can mimic sciatica after short walks. The compression, inflammation, reflex mechanism, or entrapments problems briefly described above are associates with the nerve fibers that travel through the spine, exit it, and pass down through the body to the lower extremities. these fibers from the sciatic nerve and other nerve fibers behind the sacrum travel down the legs and into the feet. The referred pain mechanisms include pathways going through the same points but originating above the spinal cord, often in the brain.

7) central mechanisms. Stroke or cerebral hemorrhage or multiple sclerosis can, on occasion, result in pain in the sciatic distribution. Referred pain is an especially relevant central mechanism of pain. Sometimes pour bodies can play tricks on us and we can confuse our central nervous system. In the case of sciatic pain, sometimes we have pain felt in the sciatic nerve but the pain is actually stemming from something completely unrelated. Some people are having referred sciatic pain and other pain including complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), also knows as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD). It is a condition in which typical symptoms are shown ( pain; often a "burning "pain, tenderness, and swelling of an extremity). These symptoms are also associated with a number of different varying degrees of sweating, warmth or/and coolness, flushing, discoloration, and shiny skin.
There are several ideas as to why CPRS develops but there is no real answer yet. Some ideas are as follows: irritation and abnormal excitation of the autonomic immune system, in the long run this reduces the diameter of blood vessels that nourish muscle and skin.
A variety of events can trigger the condition: trauma, surgery, heart disease, generative arthritis in the neck, and nerve irritation by entrapment. (ex: carpal tunnel syndrome) CPRS in not rare, it can imitate sciatica in places where pin is felt and in it's distribution on the skin. the condition can also cause a great deal of other symptoms that don't follow a pattern.

"The most common cause of sciatica"
Though some challenge the idea that sciatica generally starts in vertebrae L4,L5,S1, physicians have generally accepted this idea. The lumbar spine does most of it's job there, supports most the weight and sustains more muscular force just above that area. It's quite mobile and has variable space between nerve and bone.

more to come.....

My Views on Reiki Massage

It is the eve of the 27th and I thought I would post some information I found about "Reiki". While researching several different techinques this summer, I tried to keep an open mind. The following information is my opinion and as I will say many times, find out for yourself what you think.

My views on Reiki Massage

I recently read over a couple of books regarding Reiki Massage. The first book I read (Exploring Reiki, 108 questions and answers; written by Dr. Laxmi Puala Horan) gave me a bit of an insight on the basics of Reiki and the usage of it. I was able to read this book with somewhat of an open mind. The second book I looked at (Secrets of Reiki; By Anne Charlish and Angela Robertshaw) I put down after the first several pages.
I know there are many Reiki therapists out there that believe in this therapy heart and soul. Believing is half the battle and if they can convince their clients that this therapy works, well it probably will on them.
I am a creative thinker but yet I am a very concrete thinker. In the situation of massage, show me the science to your theory. I treat medical massage. Medical massage has the science to back up everything in which it stands for.
In the Book Exploring Reiki, it describes Reiki as “a form of energy medicine“. The Word Reiki simply means hands on healing technique. It was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan in the late 19th century. Apparently This Dr. chose the term Reiki to describe the “Universal life force energy , which calms our minds and raises our life force. In simple terms, Reiki is laying hands on a person to help heal them. The therapist lays hands on the person in certain positions and the healing process is accelerated. This book describes Reiki as “ the fundamental nature or substratum of the universe.”
This book references to the fact that in quantum physics, as well as hermetic science, energy is recognized as the fundamental nature of existence. In truth, there is no solid matter, therefore, as human beings, our thoughts and emotions are all composed of energy oscillating at various frequencies. I am not against the belief that we have energy in us and around us. The so called “universal life force energy” is beyond my rational thought or belief.
In Reiki, it is believed that emotions are a reaction to our thoughts and judgements about people and life’s situations. It is believed that these situations block the natural frequencies
and they are what cause headaches, tension, stomach aches, or ulcers. It is also believed that rage, anger, or grief held in the body can easily become tumors. So called “Power trips” can lead to the cause of rheumatoid arthritis.
If I read between the lines, I don’t totally disagree with this statement. I do think these negative situations can cause headaches, tension, stomachs or possibly even ulcers. I think with the busyness of our lives, we simply don’t have time to relax.. Our stress can lead to many negative effects. From what I understand rage or anger can not cause tumors. I don’t know how “power trips” could lead to rheumatoid arthritis.

There were several informative pages about different levels of Reiki. To learn Reiki, you need to learn and understand the four levels. I have struggled with the benefit if reiki.
At the end of the book, “Universal life force energy” is also considered to be natural healing or “nature herself.” Naturopathy is described this way “ there is only really one healing power in existence., that is nature herself.” Reiki is directly working with energy so it supposedly “goes far beyond the ordinary inherent restorative power of the body to battle and vanquish disease.”
Please understand, I have nothing against being treated by a naturopathic physician. I would rather be treated with a holistic approach sometimes than what we have come to know as “the norm”. As a massage therapist I myself believe that when the right techniques are used, the body is better able to heal itself. Reiki is not a therapy I have come to believe in or recommend. I will however encourage you to read upon on it yourself and come up with your own conclusion.

Just the beginning

Massage~
Massage is the study of anatomy in Braille. saying by: Jack meagher

I have decided to start this blog as a massage tool. With all the information out there about massage this tool will be used to help state my opinions. I will voice my opinions on other forms of "massage". I also look forward to posting some great information that I learn through my seminars. Please use my website too. www.meteoramassage.com

Please enjoy this "one small voice among millions".
